Thine Own Self: A Coming Out Novel

What makes this coming out story special is the use of humor. A good example is when the protagonist, Brad, comes out to his best friend, Chris, and explains why he rushed out of the locker room to avoid the embarrassment of his genitals reacting, Chris says— “Sorry I’m just trying to imagine you having to of Margaret Thatcher on a cold day every time you found yourself in the locker room.”
The writer gives us a bird’s eye view of the coming out process with a rare authenticity and honesty. Ryan Provencher’s first novel is like delicious comfort food. He is a master at dialogue and his conversational writing draws the reader in from beginning to end.
