This family drama has an overwrought Julia Roberts dealing with her opioid addicted son Lucas Hedges. The convoluted story line is all over the map. The film strains for credibility as Julia and Lucas put themselves into incredulous situations with drug dealers. Having Roberts join Hedges at a twelve-step meeting makes no sense. Peter Hedges (Lucas’s father) directs the life out of the melodramatic and preachy dialogue. Julia is looking for another Oscar nomination but this isn’t the vehicle. We don’t need to dive into the depressive state this movie gives us.
