Even with an unrecognizable Will Smith giving a stellar performance and gorgeous photography and stunning set pieces directed by Antoine Fuqua , Emancipation is unnecessarily violent to the point of being exploitative. I wish this important historical film had more to say about the human condition beyond what we know about slavery as an evil.
