Casey Affleck’s nuanced performance towers above the brilliant acting of Dakota Fanning and Jason Segel in this brutal and tender film about death. Still, the film has to overcome its depressing subject matter along with an annoying flipping between time periods. But because of the trio of expert actors the film remains grounded and compelling.
