This live action version of Aladdin is an awful film. Tacky special effects and generic new songs added are the least of its trouble. Thank God “A Whole New World” and “A Friend in Me” remain intact. Will Smith is miscast and offensive in his portrayal that includes subtle homophobia and racial stereotypes. Guy Ritchie’s direction is all over the map like his constantly moving and dizzying camera operator. Still the brightly colored costumes and sets, broadway like choreography and a cute monkey make the over two hour film semi-tolerable during the covid crisis.
