The final five episodes of The Affair are being shown on Showtime as the series blasts through its final season. What started out as a serious analysis of infidelity and family dynamics has turned into a guilty outrageous pleasure. My jaw is sore from gasping at each ridiculous plot turn. The cast is game but I can’t believe they look at the script and think “Oh this makes sense.” Kudos to Dominic West, Maura Tierney, and Kathleen Chalfant for gracefully chewing the scenery. Unfortunately Ruth Wilson and Joshua Jackson jumped ship at the end of last season. So I’ll be slightly sad to see this melodrama end and my search for the next guilty pleasure will begin.
