The new six-part PBS Masterpiece Theater take on Les Misérables is a mixed bag based on the first episode. Must see plus is Simon West as Jean Valjean. He rips into the character who has spent the last 19 years in prison for stealing bread. The animalistic approach to the part works well for him. The dialogue flips from mundane to melodramatic with lightning speed. David Oyetokunbo Oyelowo is problematic as Javert. His motivation and line delivery is unclear. If he’s looking for an alternate view of the evil policeman, he hasn’t found the soul of the man yet. The remaining cast leaves little impact. Budget restrictions hinder the look of the show but with seven more episodes, the big bucks may be used for more extensive battle scenes. And of course I’ll be looking forward to see what Oscar winner Olivia Coleman has to offer. As of now I’ll stick with the series.
It is still the first episode. Can’t wait to see the other five episodes. I was crying and emotional just like the musical does.
