Mary Kay Place gives a beautifully modulated performance as a single mother dealing with an adult drug addict son and the deaths of relatives and friends. Place inhabits the role with every fiber available to this under appreciated actress. Despite the film’s very slow burn, Place keeps us engaged and builds empathy as the movie plummets to a somewhat satisfying ending. It’s lovely to see Estelle Parsons and Andrea Martin in juicy supporting roles. A great deal of patience is needed to wade through this mostly depressing story. But with Place on screen, you’ll be richly rewarded.
