The whimsical French Exit starts out like gangbusters with sweet laughs. The plot of a widowed wealthy mother and her adult son losing their life saving and moving to Paris has some intrigue. They live together which makes for a refreshing turn. But as the novel progresses it descends into wearisome clichés. The reincarnated husband showing up as cat strains the narrative. Ultimately this is failed experiment.
