The new play at The Fountain called Hype Man is a rambunctious play about interracial rappers. (one white-Pinnacle/one black-Verb). The lightning speed dialogue and live rap performances make for a hyper theater evening. The structure of the play lacks a connective tissue. Playwright Idris Goodwin deals with police brutality and how it impacts the relationship between the rappers. The third character, a woman named Peep One, throws in an unclear gender plotline. The rich ideas need to be fleshed out for this 90-minute piece to be a satisfying theatrical experience. The rap studio set is flawless as is the acting by Chad Addison, Mathew Hancock and Clarissa Thibeaux.
