Observations-Heroic Lives

Heroic Lives was an evening of stories and songs from LGBTQ seniors. I wanted to support members of my writing group at the Village. Cassandra, Carl, and Michael lovingly shared their life experiences. The vocals complemented their narratives. The accompanying piano bitingly brought their accounts to life. 18 seniors participated in the event. Two others stood out and brought me to tears. One man revealed the death of his long-term partner with the song “Time Heals Everything”. I was broken as I listened to the lyrics- “Time heals everything but loving you.” It was a favorite song for me and my lover Scott who died of AIDS in 1989. Later in the evening a woman shared about her father coming out as gay in 1990. He had AIDS and was afraid he might infect his family so didn’t let them touch him. Her song was Luther Vandross’s “Dance With My Father”

If I could get another chance
Another walk
Another dance with him
I’d play a song that would never ever end
How I’d love love love
To dance with my father again.

I wept as she pulled us into the lyrics. My father died after my Bar Mitzvah.
