We went to a screening of “The Post” last night at the Directors Guild of America Theater. 10 minutes before the film started there was a scream in the audience. Then some additional shouting. It had just been announced that Doug Jones had won the Alabama election. It was a surreal experience happening right before this politically relevant film about freedom of the press would hit the screen. The Post is an immensely entertaining and inspiring film about the publishing of the Pentagon Papers in the early 1970’s. Meryl Streep turns in another flawless performance as the publisher Katherine Graham. Tom Hanks does his best as the editor Ben Bradlee but never quite rises to the task. Spielberg directs with his usual flair and makes some of the talky and preachy parts of the film work because of excellent editing and a great supporting cast.
