The revival of 1776 at the Ahmanson Theater in Los Angeles, takes exciting liberties by using a cast of all women. The orchestrations and vocal design for the female timbre helps invigorate the music and lyrics of Sherman Edwards. Showstopper numbers abound by Shawna Hamic, Brooke Simpson, and Tiffani Barbour all make the theater shudder. Peter Stone’s book is problematic although directors Jeffrey L. Page and Diane Paulus try their best to keeping the audience engaged during the endless patter between songs.
