You might not know how unsatisfying this movie was until you watch end credits where the real Aretha sings at the Kennedy Honors saluting Carole King with “A Natural Woman” In those four minutes Aretha wipes away any of the chills and thrills I’d gotten during Jennifer Hudson’s performance. I prayed that the dreadful and endless scenes of Aretha as a ten-year-old would end so that Hudson could make her entrance. The film does get a charge when Jennifer makes a stab at Aretha’s music catalogue but that soon dissipates and we’re subjected to bio-pic cliches. Not a bad film, just a disappointing one.
