Despite the stagey nature of the film Regina King keeps her camera moving along with insightful dialogue that pushes the story beyond its original stage source. Leslie Odom from Hamilton is a standout as Sam Cooke while Kingsley Ben-Adir as Malcolm X is as good or better than Denzell Washington in Spike Lee’s Malcolm X. This is vibrant cinema.
