Corny, old fashioned, contrived, unbelievable, and yet I was gushing tears and got chills from the musical numbers. The thrill of seeing Meryl Streep play a washed-out diva, Nicole Kidman channeling a Bob Fosse dancer, and James Corden breaking your heart may have been enough to throw me into an emotional spiral. The cartoonish sets and costumes are perfection. The choreography may be derivative but who cares. The score is repetitive but deliciously melodic. The Ryan Murphy factory wins out again.
