Who would have thought that Terence Mallick would try to remake Sound of Music? An Austrian farmer not willing to pledge his allegiance to Hitler is the premise of this three-hour torture chamber movie. Gorgeous photography only goes so far to keep an audience engaged. Repetitive sequences and deadly long narrations make this an emotionally hollow experience. Individual pieces of the movie making process are superb. Acting, art direction and music are all pitch perfect. But this film needs ruthless editing. With an auteur like Mallick that’s not going to happen. So we are left with another artistic bore.
