Todd Hayne’s Dark Waters has technical expertise, an exceptional cast that includes Mark Ruffalo, Anne Hathaway, Tim Robbins, Victor Garber and Bill Pullman, and an environmental horror plot. What it doesn’t have is a unique take on the familiar “what is causing this mysterious illness?” premise. The traditional story telling with court room drama, angry clients, and an exhausted attorney hurts this true story. This cautionary tale about Dupont, Teflon, corporate greed and correction needs a reason to exist on screen. Todd Hayne has failed to deliver.
