Kristin Chenoweth’s new release might appear to be a mixed bag of cover versions but her deep soprano voice is able to bring new shadings to these classics. She is a brave woman to take on The Way We Were. Let’s face it when you have to compete with Streisand and Gladys Knight, you are asking for trouble. She pulls it off elegantly. So, she goes ahead and rips up You Don’t Own Me. Her wide range serves this chanteuse well. Of course, duetting with Ariadne Grande helps. How can you resist yet another version of I Will Always Love You? Well if it’s Kristin and Dolly synchronizing, then give up fighting back. The Man Who Got Away seems unnecessary and I’m A Woman with Jennifer Hudson doesn’t fare much better. She does give depth to Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? The arrangements are respectful of the original with just enough tampering to give us a refreshing pick me up. I Wanna Be Around challenges the great Eydie Gorme’s iconic version. And dare I say that Linda Ronstadt might worry that Kristin’s Desperado might break your heart more than Linda’s.
