Cate Blanchett owns the role of Bernadette in Richard Linklater’s recent film. She plays an architect who loses her mojo after a series of miscarriages. The movie tracks her recovery in a refreshing manner. With low scores from rotten tomatoes and Metacritic, my expectations were low. I was pleasantly surprised by the high entertainment value the film provided. I suppose self-discovery is an easy target for critics. Additionally, themes of depression, drug use, neurosis and isolationism have been done to death. There is a quirky joy that holds the film together. The rambling dialogue works. The conventional story telling allows the actors to explore nuances that drags the viewer along for the ride. Maybe the critics were gunning for Linklater since this is out of his comfort zone. This film is a perfect way to finish the dog days of August.
