The Royal Ballet presented Mayerling using the music of Lizst at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on Saturday night. This rich beautifully produced ballet is based on the historical incident of Austrians’ Count Prince Rudolph’s apparent murder in 1889. There was a film of the same name from the late 1960’s. Despite a complicated story line and multiple characters, the dancing and music make for a glorious evening of entertainment. The three-hour ballet fully explores the relationship between the Austrian and Hungarian empires. The evocative sets and lighting are superlative. Having a live orchestra makes for an experience that rarely rises to this high class level.
