This startling concert of Great Opera and Film Chorus performed by The Los Angeles Master Chorale was a revelation. The eclectic mix of Danny Elfman’s “Edward Scissorhands/Alice in Wonderland” side by side with Verdi’s “Va, pensiero” from Nabucco made for an afternoon delight at Disney Hall. (one more performance Sunday night at 7). But the highlight was “Proud Corazon” from the animated COCO with soloist Angelito Garcia. He brought the hall to its knees with his energetic refreshingly clear tones belted throughout the auditorium. Michael Abels’s anthem themes from Jordan Peele’s “Us” and “Get Out” captured the frightening mood of those film stunningly. Many of the composers were in the theater. I can only guess the thrill of hearing their work with full orchestra and chorus would be. Grant Gershon conducted religiously and grabbed every nuance from these film and opera masterworks.
