Bad Times at the El Royale may be a brilliant creative failure but there is one singular sensation that makes this a must see. Cynthia Erivo plays a 60’s Supremes like singer and what she does with the song “You Can’t Hurry Love” will blow you through the ceiling. The rest of the cast including Jeff Bridges, Jon Hamm and Chris Hemsworth can’t touch her skyscraping acting. The film’s art direction and jukebox soundtrack will bring you to your knees. But the convoluted story, dreary length and unrelenting violence are severely problematic. Mystery, horror, and Tarantino like structure don’t mesh. The director Drew Goddard may be a genius to have concocted the film but the world and cinema doesn’t need this. We love Cynthia Erivo and can’t wait to see her in Widows later this year.
