The Happy Prince is quite a dour bio pic. It is so darkly lit that you’ll want to have your cataracts checked before the screening. You can blame Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon for making it acceptable to use natural candle lighting cinematography. I was left cold during the descent of Oscar Wilde’s life. Thank goodness there were a few priceless witty Wilde lines to break up the darkness. O.K. so this is the role that Rupert Everett was meant to play. Sure let him direct and write the script. What I was looking for was a unique take on this story that has been done multiple times. This movie is only for die hard Oscar Wilde fans. The supporting cast that includes Colin Furth, Emily Watson, and Tom Wilkinson were wasted.
