Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool is Annette Benning’s annual try for an Oscar nomination and ultimately win. She is superb in her recreation of Gloria Grahame. Annette holds nothing back in this devastating portrayal of Gloria living in London at the end of her career and life. Jamie Bell is a revelation as her young lover. His dancing scene with Annette Benning is priceless. The chemistry between the actors bubbles and pops throughout the film. Unfortunately, they cannot save the movie from being a routine bio-pic. The flic never explains what was special about Ms. Grahame. If they assume audiences are familiar with this academy award winning icon, Sony Classics is in for a rude awakening.
