This seven-episode series zooms to the top of the heap for quality television or film for 2020. You won’t believe the brilliance of the story of Beth Harmon, an orphaned prodigy chess player. The film explores female friendship, parenting, and drug and alcohol addiction. There is unrelenting suspense as you are taken into world wide chess competitions culminating in Russia. Ultimately the theme of resilience brings the viewer to tears. Gorgeously designed sets and costumes recreating the fifties and sixties make for an opulent experience. The song selections are miraculous. Anya Taylor-Joy is riveting in the lead and gets magnificent support from Marielle Heller as her adoptive mother. A thrilling ride.
