Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen chew the scenery with bombastically brilliant acting that  you can almost forgive this convoluted second rate Dirty Rotten Scoundrel. They are fun to watch and their command of acting technique is unparalleled. Director Bill Condon knows how to make a well-made film. Let’s face it he wrote Gods and Monsters and Chicago as well as directing Dreamgirls. He tries to give the film a high class sheen and only partially succeeds. This 2019 film just started showing on HBO so if you do a thirty day trial that includes HBO max The Good Liar may be worth a look.
