Uncut Gems

Adam Sandler plays a Jewish jeweler with a gambling addiction. He saturates the screen for over two hours with a kinetic performance that leaves you breathless but ultimately uncaring. He’s proved that he can act from his performance in Punch Drunk Love. Once you get that out of your system there is nothing in this movie to recommend. Idina Menzel plays his bored angry wife with enough cliché acting to wipe out any further film career. The Safdie brothers direct with vibrancy and inventiveness that becomes monotonous. The bookending sequences are head scratchers. Ah yes there is one portion of the film that almost made it worthwhile. The Passover Seder scene had a gutsy comic and poignancy that I wish the rest of the film had attempted.
