Judy

Renee Zellweger haunts the screen as Judy Garland. She claws her way through all facets of Judy. Motherhood, stardom, booze, and drugs. Renee inhabits the role vocally and physically. But this is raw and depressing with little of the joy that Ms. Garland’s legacy of movie, television and live performances that remain in the public memory fifty years after her death. Based on the play End of The Rainbow, the movie encapsulates her final years. Her children Liza, Lorna and Joey along with her last husband Mickey Deems, ex- Sid Luft and Louie B. Mayer are all touched upon in this adaptation. Much of the film is standard bio-pic career twists. But Renee’s performance keeps us anchored and engaged with her Oscar worthy performance. This Sam Smith duet with Renee Zellwegger is a real treat.
