Velvet Buzzsaw is a magnificent failure. The skewering of the art world is a fine premise but when you combine it with the horror genre, you’ve got trouble in river city. The cast has a fine time chewing the art work. Jake Gyllenhaal is always interesting. Not quite good enough to be a guilty pleasure, it is difficult to excuse the believability factor. Gilroy’s previous work Nightcrawler was a far superior effort. And how is that Rene Russo never ages? Based on my first film of 2019, the year doesn’t bode well.
