Mary Poppins Returns is a routine movie musical up until the last 30 minutes of the 2 hour and ten minute running time. “The Light Fantastic” is a glorious throwback to great show stopping dance numbers that have filled our senses with unbridled joy in the past. Think “Who Will Buy” from Oliver or “Cool” from West Side Story. Lin-Manuel Miranda and chorus sing and dance with brilliantly jubilant choreography. It brings this sugary film from doldrums to thrills. Emily Blunt doesn’t even try to bring any Julie Andrew sensibility to the part. Sandy Powel’s costumes are cartoonish and garish. The songs written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman are mundane and forgettable. The sweetest part of the last 30 minutes include surprise appearances by Dick Van Dyke and Angela Lansbury that almost make the entire film work.
