The Favourite is a three-way female historical epic masterpiece theater with the characteristics of All About Eve. I wish it had been fun. The film has  Olivia Colman as Queen Anne and Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz playing cousins fighting for the affections and control over the Queen. All three act up a storm and chew the gorgeous scenery and costumes. Too bad they can’t make us emotionally connect. The bell like curved cinematography is annoying. The director Yorgos Lanthimos has a unique take on 18th century England. He deals with the politics of fighting war with the French authentically. Yet our interest lags due to the repetitive viciousness between the women. This isn’t a guilty pleasure Dynasty for 2018.
