The Children Act

Ian McEwan sure knows how to adapt his novels to film. Talk about a thought-provoking premise. We have a 17-year-old son of Jehovah Witnesses that has leukemia. He needs blood transfusions which are against his religion. The title of the film “The Children Act” refers to a British law that gives the court the right to direct the hospital/doctor to give transfusions or other medical necessary procedures that will save a minor’s life. Emma Thompson plays the judge who must decide. The scene in the hospital where Emma questions the patient about what he really wants is peerless. Fionn Whitehead (Dunkirk) plays the 17-year old son gloriously. He matches Emma Thompson’s bravura performance.
