Florence and the Machine seems to be channeling Adele on “High as Hope” with a rock edge tinge that complements her wailing alto voice. Florence Welch rips through your psyche with these lyrics on “Hunger”
And it’s Friday night and it’s kicking in
And I can’t dress, they’re gonna crucify me
Oh, but you and all your vibrant youth
How could anything bad ever happen to you?
You make a fool of death with your beauty
“South London Forever” blasts with a rhythmic drumming. They go all religious on “Big God” with these lines:
You need a big god
Big enough to hold your love
You need a big god
Big enough to fill you up
There is a slight tendency to overproduction on “Grace” and “100 Years”. Then again trying to revive the Phil Spector wall of sound isn’t a bad thing.
On the initial listening there are depressing overtones that might funk your mood. If you give the album a chance you’ll notice a rich depth on subsequent listenings.
