The cloudy dim cinematography gives this film an unwarranted after school special feel. The subject of how parents deal with a 4 year old gender fluid child is vital. Claire Danes and Jim Parsons give nuanced performances that build to a brilliant theatrical outburst. Ann Dowd doesn’t know how to not nail a character. But ultimately the film is done in by flat direction and tired writing.
