American Animals

This film takes the documentary and fiction cinema form the furthest I’ve witnessed.  The story about four kids planning a heist to take steal a book worth 12 million dollars from their school library is flabbergasting. Interpolating interviews with the real college students keeps the film grounded in a version of reality. Changing the perspective between real and fiction keeps the audience on its toes. The film plays tricks with the memory each of the actual thieves. Unfortunately the charisma of both the actors and their actual counterparts clouds the impact of the violence and the regret experienced. A far from perfect film but well worth visiting.
